After a serious car accident with hit and run, the photographer Felix Wagner has for several weeks in a hospital. Add a Friend is produced by Endemol subsidiary Wiedemann & Berg Filmproduktion on behalf of TNT series. The idea and the script come from Christian Lyra and Sebastian Wehling. The director of the first ten episodes led Tobi Baumann. Filmed they were from January to early February 2012 in the Bavaria Studios in Munich. A second season was already given before the broadcast of the first episode in order. The shooting for the ten episodes of the second season was completed in late February 2013.

In June 2013 TNT series extended the series with a third and final season, which will air in fall 2014.
