The Adda ( antique: Addua ) is an Italian river that flows through Lombardy, Lake Como crosses and joins the Po. It is with their 313 km of the fourth-longest watercourse Italy.

Geography

The Adda is one of the few female designated rivers of Italy. It rises in Alpisella in 2235 meters altitude in the Rhaetian Alps.

The upper Adda flows through the Valtellina over about 100 km before it flows into Lake Como, whose main tributary is. In the lower Valtellina, the flow of the Adda is greatly reduced by a hydroelectric power plant of the Italian electricity producer, Enel, which drains the water through an underground tunnel and close to Lake Como brings 11 km downriver again to the surface.

Larger towns on the lower Adda Lecco, Trezzo, Cassano d' Adda ( where it enters the flat part of the Po Valley ), Rivolta d' Adda, Lodi and Castelnuovo Bocca d' Adda, at the confluence with the Po. On its shores two natural parks were created on 16 September 1983.

  • The Adda Nord Park, 54 km from Lecco after Truccazzano extends.
  • The park Adda South, 60km along the lower reaches of the river extends from Rivolta d' Adda up to its confluence with the Po.

Hydrology

Its main supply from original ice leads to a maximum flow rate from June to July. Its average flow was estimated at 187 m³ s /.

History

Built in 1377 Trezzo bridge over the Adda was a arch span of 72 meters, the then largest arch bridge in the world. Their span was not surpassed until the late 18th century with the introduction of metal construction in the Industrial Revolution.

The Adda was the border between the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice.

The valley of the Adda, the Valtellina, was a cause of confrontation between France and the Habsburgs during the Thirty Years War.

On April 27, 1799 defeated in the battle of the Adda, the Russians and Austrians under Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov the French.

Under Napoleon existed in the Kingdom of Italy, a Département de l' Adda, north of the Serio.

On 28 July 1987, a huge landslide, through which the village Morignone was completely destroyed in the province of Sondrio occurred in Valtellina. 27 people lost their lives, the Adda was temporarily dammed by the masses of earth.
