Adebayo Adedeji

Adebayo Adedeji ( born December 21, 1930 in Ijebu -Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria ) is a former Nigerian politician and former Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa of the United Nations (UN / ECA).

Biography

After school he studied at the University College of Ibadan at the University of Leicester, where he earned a 1958 Bachelor of Science ( B.Sc.). Another post-graduate studies at Harvard University, he finished in 1961 with a Master of Public Administration (MPA ).

After graduating, he was first employees in the public service of Nigeria, before he was in 1966 Professor of Public Administration at the University of Ife. In 1967 he graduated from the University of London, a Philosophiae Doctor ( Ph.D. Economics).

In 1971 he was appointed Minister of Economic Development and Reconstruction in government of President Yakubu Gowon. This office he held until 1975.

Following this, he was Executive Secretary of the 1975 United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UN Economic Commission for Africa ) in June. He had held for sixteen years to 1991 this office. At the same time he was, as such, from January 1978 to 1991 Under-Secretary General of the United Nations. He was also a 1984-1991 Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on the African economic crisis.

After that, he was, among other things founder and Executive Director of the African Centre for Development and Strategic Studies (African Centre for Development and Strategic Studies ( ACDESS ) ). In addition, he was a member of the Advisory Board of the UN African Futures Project.
