Adelaide Island

The Adelaide Island (English Adelaide Iceland; Spanish Isla Adelaïda (Chile) and Isla Belgrano (Argentina )) is the seventh largest Antarctic island.

Geography

The Adelaide Island is located on the northern edge of Marguerite Bay, off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is characterized by a frozen estuary, The Gullet ( Argentina and Chile Garganta canan Angostura called ) separated from the Arrowsmith Peninsula of the Antarctic Peninsula. In between there are still islands Hansen and Day. The largely covered by ice island is 135 km long, a maximum of 33 km wide and measures 4463 km ² in area. They reached Mount Gaudry a height of 2315 m above sea level.

History

First time ( "Queen Adelaide ") was the island on 15 February 1832 by John Biscoe, a British sealers, viewing and after Queen Adelaide named. Biscoe attended at that time that it would be the island is the most south -lying land. For unknown reasons, he misjudged significantly in the size of the island; he gave to their length with only 8 miles ( 15 km ).

In November 1893, the island was sighted again by the Norwegian whaler Carl Julius Evensen. On 25 December 1904, the Frenchman Jean -Baptiste Charcot reached the island. Because he realized that the country was much larger, he first went expecting to have discovered a new, previously unknown land and called it " Côte Loubet ". During his 1908-1910 Antarctic Expedition charted Charcot carried out the country and found that it was discovered the island of Biscoe. He transferred darafhin the term " Loubet Coast " on the adjacent coast of the mainland.

In July and August 1936, the island of the British Graham Land Expedition was visited, as well as in the late 1940s by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey ( FIDS ). The FIDS maintained from 1961 to 1977 a research station on the island. This so-called " Base T " in 1984 handed over to Chile, it is used under the name Teniente Luis Carvajal Villarroel to this day in the summer. From the British was inaugurated located on the southeast coast Rothera Station in February 1976. In the years 1989 and 1990 there, the landing strip was greatly expanded.
