Adelaide of Paris

Adelaide of Friuli (also: Adelheid of Paris; * 850, † November 18 901 in Laon ) was the second wife of the West Frankish king Ludwig II

Life

Adelheid was born as the daughter of Count Adelhard, Margrave of Friuli. She was the last granddaughter of Count Beggo of Paris and his wife Alpheidis, a daughter of King Ludwig I. Other sources they consider an illegitimate daughter of Charlemagne. Adelheid was therefore cousin or aunt of Louis II

Ludwig's father, Charles II chose Adelaide as a wife for his son, but he married in a secret ceremony and against the will of his father Ansgard of Burgundy. Karl left the marriage divorce by the Pope and the marriage with Adelheid was celebrated in February 875. Due to the high degree of relationship of the couple, however, the Pope, Adelheid at the Council refused to Troyes ( 878 ) to crown. Already after one year of marriage her husband died 879 in Compiegne. The pregnant Adelheid gave birth after the death of her only son, Carl. The previously repudiated first wife of her husband, Ansgard, and her two sons accused Adelheid of adultery and she had to defend himself in a long, difficult process.

Ansgards sons Ludwig III. and Carloman II followed their father as kings, but both died after short reigns without leaving an heir. Adelheid was acquitted, and in 898 it was the coronation of her son Charles III. attend.

Adelheid died three years later in Laon. She was buried in the Abbey of Saint- Corneille in Compiègne.
