Adelino da Palma Carlos

? Adelino da Palma Carlos / i ( May 3, 1905 in Faro, † 27 October 1992 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese lawyer and politician. It was after the Carnation Revolution from May 15 to July 17, 1974 the first Portuguese Prime Minister of the Third Republic after the fall of the Estado Novo.

Since Palma Carlos was already since his youth, an opponent of the dictatorship of Salazar and later Caetanos. He was - well known for his liberal settings - since his studies at the University of Lisbon. General Spinola, the transition became president after the Carnation Revolution, therefore, summoned him to the top of the first post-revolutionary government, the general saw him as a counterweight to the radical socialist currents within the MFA. The possibility raised by da Palma Carlos government united the entire range of opponents of Estado Novo, from the more conservative supporters of Spinola's up to members of the Communist Party and radical members of the MFA. Such was the more conservative later Prime Minister Francisco Sá Carneiro member of his government, as well - as defense minister - who later became Prime Minister and President Mário Soares, acted as Secretary of the Communist Party General Álvaro Cunhal.

Since Palma Carlos, it was not possible to undertake these various currents within his government on a line. On top of that Spinola, the great support of the Prime Minister, himself increasingly came into conflict with the radical forces of the MFA, since he was no longer able to support Palma Carlos why. In addition, during the Carnation Revolution unofficial, not constitutionally legitimate bodies of power were formed, the National Salvation Front, the tasks of the toppled government took over immediately after the revolution, at the commencement of the Government da Palma Carlos was not resolved, and particularly of course the MFA. Since Palma Carlos failed in his efforts, these parallel bodies of power to disempower again, the government power to concentrate in his government.

As a suggestion from da Palma Carlos, in which it was whether the presidential election before, after or at the same time should be conducted with a constitutional referendum was rejected by all sides of society, he resigned. Spinola had no choice but to appoint as the more radical Vasco Gonçalves his successor, given the power relations within the MFA. Even the more conservative members of the Government da Palma Carlos, such as Sá Carneiro, this new government no longer belonged to.

After his resignation to Adelino da Palma Carlos pulled back completely from politics.

Adelino da Palma Carlos was married to a lawyer and women's rights activist Elina Júlia Chaves Pereira Guimarães since 1928, the only daughter of the Prime Minister of the First Republic, Vitorino de Carvalho Guimarães. He had no children.
