Adelsö

Adelsön is the name of an island in Lake Mälaren and Adelsö is the name of a parish and a small village on the island. The island is located northwest of Stockholm, and is a member of Ekerö.

Geography

History

During the second half of the 12th century, the church ( Adelsö kyrka ) at Hovgården was built in the southern part of the island and about 1270 erected the sons Birger Jarl Magnus Ladulås and Valdemar Birgersson, the royal court Alsnö hus, in as a pleasure palace the summer months served. Here, the statute of Alsnö was decided in 1279, with the needle was introduced in Sweden.

Nature and people

Adelsöns nature is made of coniferous wood -grown hills, in between the old cultural landscape with meadows, fields and old oak trees. On the northern part of the island a 14 kilometer trail takes you past well-preserved farms and grave mounds from the Iron Age. In the south of the island, the Wallburg Skansberget and the World Heritage Hovgården are. The fauna is species-rich, inter alia, with elk, deer, wild boar and fox.

The local population consists of about 750 people who are mainly engaged in agriculture and horticulture, but some commute to Stockholm. A free car ferry runs between Adelsön and the neighboring island Munsön / Ekerön.
