Adgandestrius

Adgandestrius was the Latinized name of a prince of the Germanic tribe of the Chatti, who offered himself as a murderer of Cherusker prince Arminius in the Roman Senate. The offer was formally rejected.

His Germanic name is uncertain. Jacob Grimm suspected the composition "ad Gandestrii " ie "at / to the gander ." L. Freytag refused but, since in particular the prefix is ad does not occur otherwise in Tacitus. More likely it was a Romanization of the Celtic name " Hadgan " where the weak word-initial H was omitted from the Romanization. The name Hadgan can be to still find out formerly Celtic regions in familial lineages.

Why just this Chat for such a great hatred of Arminius harbored that he even andi duck itself in writing to the Roman Senate for an assassination, is not explained by Tacitus. The traditional pedigree of Cheruskersippen reveals, however, that Cheruscan Prince's children his age were married in the general chat with Prince matic children. Arminius had this rule obviously broken by the kidnapping of the daughter of Segestes Thusnelda. The assumption that Adgandestrius his extraordinary hatred of it scooped that he was the so duped fiancee, therefore, is not too far away. Was early on thought that was derived from that of the later Hagen Nibelungenlied.
