Administrative divisions of Sakhalin Oblast

The Sakhalin Oblast in the Far Eastern Federal District of the Russian Federation is divided into 17 Rajons and a city district (as of 2012).

In contrast to most other subjects of the Russian Federation there are in the Sakhalin Oblast few land ( selskoje posselenije ) and municipalities ( gorodskoje posselenije ): only two city and rayon a rural community in Uglegorski and rajon a town in Poronaiski. Otherwise, all other localities are the respective Rajons respectively the county subordinated directly.

History

As part of the administrative reform in the Russian Federation, most of the former Rajons were converted into urban districts with law of Sakhalin Oblast on 21 July 2004; only the Rajons Newelski Uglegorski and remained as such. In addition, the territory was divided by the urban-type settlement Wachruschew into an independent urban district. To the introduction of urban districts instead of Rajons there was a prolonged dispute between the Oblastregierung and the Attorney General of the Oblast; Finally, she was but confirmed on 5 April 2006 in this form by the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation in this form.

2009, the Newelski was after a local referendum rayon in an urban district of converted and released its communities.

End of 2011, the city districts with the exception of the urban district around the Oblastzentrum Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk were renamed back to Rajons. But this case remained the previously created municipal structures - with the Rajons, former city districts, directly subordinate villages instead of a intermediate level of rural and urban communities - maintained. Only the county Wachruschew was again rajon incorporated into the Poronaiski and converted into a municipality ( gorodskoje posselenije ); the communities of the Uglegorski rajon remained.
