Origin of the name

Origin from the Celtic ( Atanate, Atanat, Attnat ). The name means marsh ( Waterfront ).

History

The first mention of Adnet was 741 in the transfer certificate from the Bavarian Duke Odilo of the Maximilian cell in Bischofshofen.

1758 the first school was opened in Mesnerhaus. 1856 Adnet became an independent parish. 1890 there was a great fire in Adnet at the church, 6 houses and 14 outbuildings have been destroyed. It has caused a loss of 100,000 guilders. Although the Baroque interior of the church was not completely destroyed, it was decided to completely rebuild the church in the Gothic Revival style.

1909-1914 the Wiestalkraftwerk in Adnet was built. This resulted in many new jobs and Adnet was connected to the power grid. After 1945, Adnet was into a residential community and the number of inhabitants doubled.

Marble quarries and Museum

The Adnet marble is actually not a true marble, but a dense, sandable and polishable limestone. Even the Romans built from the 2nd century onwards Adnet marble. This limestone occurs in a wide range of colors and made ​​of him a number of works of art were created mainly in the Middle Ages. In modern times, it was received well overseas. Significant works from Adnet marble are found mainly in Austria in the Parliament building in Vienna, at the fortress Hohensalzburg, in the collegiate church of St. Peter in Salzburg, further also in Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland.

Previously, many Adneter farmers had their own quarry, now little marble is only degraded. Altogether, there are about 10-20 quarries (some of them relatively hidden in the forest ); Today, marble is mined only in about 5 quarries.
