Adolf Borsdorf

Friedrich Adolf Borsdorf ( born December 23, 1854 in Dittmannsdorf, Saxony, † April 15, 1923 ) was a German horn player.

Life and work

Friedrich Adolf Borsdorf was a farmer's son and pupil of Oskar French He was principal horn in various orchestras, as in Sir Henry Woods Queen's Hall, London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden (London ) and in the English National Opera Orchestra. Borsdorf was also a member of " God's Own Horn Quartet ".

In addition to his solo career, he was from 1882 to 1923 professor of horn at the Royal College of Music, and from 1897 to 1923 at the Royal Academy of Music. In this position, he revolutionized the art of horn playing in England. Several of the more than 60 students from Borsdorf later became famous horn players, including Alfred Brain and Aubrey Brain and Frank Probyn. Even his sons and pupils Emil Borsdorf, Oskar Borsdorf and Francis Bradley was known horn players. Francis changed his surname to be confused with his father or one of his brothers. In addition, German names were not particularly career advancement in his time in England.

Together with 40 other musicians, was Friedrich Adolf Borsdorf 1904 one of the founding members of the London Symphony Orchestra.
