Adolf, Duke of Guelders

Adolf of Egmond ( born February 12, 1438 Grave, North Brabant, † June 27, 1477 in Tournai, Hainaut ) from the House of Egmond, was from 1465 to 1471 and 1477 Duke of funds.

Life

He was the son of Arnold of Egmond (* 1410, † 1473 ) and of Catherine of Cleves (* 1417, † 1479 ).

In a bloody succession dispute Adolf won the Guelders duke against his father Arnold. He was supported by the Gelders estates. 1465 the decision was made when he could capture his father. In the battle of Straelen on June 23, 1468 Adolf of Egmond triumphed over Kleve.

In 1461 he was inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece. His increasingly antiburgundische policy provoked Duke Charles the Bold, who took him prisoner in 1471 and his father Arnold of Egmond reinstated as Duke of funds. After the death of Charles the Bold Adolf of Egmond was 1477 again shortly Duke of money, but he fell in the same year before Tournai. He was buried in the Cathedral in Tournai.

Family and descendants

He married on December 28, 1463 in Brussels in the first marriage Catharine de Bourbon ( * 1440, † 1469 ), daughter of Charles I de Bourbon and Agnes of Burgundy. From this marriage came two children:
