Adolf Friedrich Stenzler

Adolf Friedrich Stenzler ( born July 9, 1807 in Wolgast, † February 27, 1887 in Breslau) was a German Indologist, in particular dealt with the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit literature and is considered one of the founders of Sanskrit studies in Germany. He worked from 1833 as an associate and in 1847 a full professor of oriental languages ​​at the University of Breslau, where he 1862/1863 acted beyond as a librarian and in 1836 as curator of the University Library, as well as rector. Life

Adolf Friedrich Stenzler was born 1807 in Wolgast as a son of the local superintendent Stenzler Lorenz and his wife Charlotte Droysen. He began during his school years in his hometown of Hebrew and Arabic learning and attended from the age of 15 years, the high school in Friedland in Mecklenburg. From 1826, he studied theology and then Oriental Languages ​​at the University of Greifswald, Johann Gottfried Ludwig Kosegarten, 1827 at the Friedrich- Wilhelms- University of Berlin under Franz Bopp and 1828 at the University of Bonn in August Wilhelm Schlegel. He received his PhD on 12 September 1829 in Berlin and then went in October of the same year for a year to further studies in Paris. Here he visited among other courses of Antoine- Léonard de Chezy and Silvestre de Sacy. He then worked at the library of the East India House in London until 1833, and came there with the British Indologists Henry Thomas Colebrooke in contact.

Adolf Friedrich Stenzler was married to Marie born of love Roth, but the marriage remained childless. He died in 1887 in Breslau.

Work

Adolf Friedrich Stenzler both published a number of books in Sanskrit and translations from Sanskrit into German. In addition to the Indian literature, he was also with the Indian literature in the fields of law and medicine. In 1866 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences.

As his most important work, first published in 1868 is considered the " elementary book of Sanskrit language " grammar and vocabulary of Sanskrit. From the sale proceeds, he endowed a scholarship for students of Sanskrit in Wroclaw. The book, which was carried on, among others, Richard Pischel and Karl Friedrich Geldner, appeared in the year 2003, more than 130 years after it was first published with unaltered title and Stenzlers authorship in a revised 19th edition.
