Adolf Michaelis

Adolf Michaelis ( born June 22, 1835 in Kiel, † August 12 1910 in Strasbourg ) was a German classical archaeologist.

Life and work

As a nephew of the archaeologist Otto Jahn himself Michaelis interested even during the high school years at the Kiel Gelehrtenschule for antiquity. In 1853 he began his studies of classical philology and archeology at the University of Leipzig, it set 1854/55 continued in Berlin and then studied from 1855 to 1857 in Kiel, where he received his doctorate with a dissertation on Horace.

1859/60 he received together with Alexander Conze the first time awarded travel scholarship from the German Archaeological Institute, with whom he traveled to Greece. In 1861 he qualified as a professor in Kiel and in 1862 associate professor of archeology and director of the collection of casts at the University of Greifswald. From 1865 to 1872 he was Associate Professor of Classical Studies and Archaeology and Director of the Archaeological Museum of the University of Tübingen. In 1872 he became professor of archeology at the newly founded University of Strasbourg. Here he was able to build a large archaeological institute teaching collection, the collection of casts and library. From 1894 to 1899 he was also the interim administrator of the Egyptological collection.
