Adolf Wuttke

Karl Friedrich Adolf Wuttke ( born November 10, 1819 in Breslau, † April 12, 1870 in Halle ( Saale) ) was a Protestant theologian, author and politician.

Life

The father, a master tailor, sent his son Adolf in 1830 on the prestigious Maria Magdalena Gymnasium in Breslau. After graduating from high school - along with the future doctor Rudolf Leubuscher - in 1840 Adolf Wuttke studied Protestant theology at the University of Breslau. Strongly influenced he was supported by the philosopher Christlieb Braniß Julius ( 1792-1873 ). In 1844 he passed his first theological examination and the Rector exam. Then he was as a candidate both in Königsberg ( Prussia) as well as in his hometown of Wroclaw. During this time he had the opportunity to deal with the different religious movements under Johannes Ronge and Julius Rupp. After the second theological examination Wuttke his doctorate in 1848 with the thesis " Buddhaistarum disciplina " in Breslau, where he also completed his habilitation on the advice of Braniß.

With a short break in Königsberg he taught from 1849 to 1854 at the faculty of the University of Breslau Evangelical theological. However, his livelihood, he was able to finance only with additional auxiliary revenue as a teacher and assistant pastor. His "History of Paganism ", which appeared in two volumes in 1852 and 1853, led in 1854 to the appointment as associate professor of theology at the University of Berlin.

For his meritorious service he was appointed by his department in 1860 an honorary doctorate ( Dr. theol. Honoris causa ). In 1861 he was appointed to the University of Halle. Besides Julius Müller he taught systematic theology here.

Because he wanted to enshrine Christian values ​​in politics, he was a member of the old conservative party for a term of a member of the Prussian House of Representatives.

Wuttke was a regular contributor to the Lutheran- denominational church newspapers and pastoral conferences. His main works helped that he was known far beyond the borders of theological science also. " The German people superstition " was released in 2006 in a new edition in a publishing house in Leipzig. At the funeral of Adolf Wuttke in Halle ( Saale) August Tholuck held the grave speech.
