Adolf

Adolf or Adolph is a masculine first name and family name.

Origin and Meaning

The name comes from the Old High German and is composed of adal ( noble, nobly ) and wolf ( wolf). This may be understood as " noble wolf " or " noble wolf ", but many old Germanic personal name simply composed of two positive -to-understand elements without the composition as such must have a meaning.

Popularity

Both in Protestant Germany (because of Gustav Adolf ) and in the Catholic (because of Adolph Kolping ) Adolf had a certain popularity. But since the beginning of the 20th century decreased the frequency of name assignment. After a recovery starting in 1933, which lasted until 1942, broke the use of the name - probably in correlation to the popularity of Adolf Hitler - excessively. Since the early 1950s, the first name Adolf is awarded almost no newborn in German-speaking countries. By the dictator Adolf Hitler and also by other Nazis such as Adolf Eichmann, the name is very heavily loaded and is therefore almost no longer awarded.

Popular name was also in Sweden, where several kings bore the name. However, he was not in any decade since the 1920s among the ten most popular first name. Today (as of 2012), there are only about 3000 of that name. Since at least 1998, this name was given in each year is less than 10 newborn boys.
