Adolfo Alejandro Nouel

Adolfo Alejandro Nouel Bobadilla ( born December 12, 1862 in Santo Domingo, † June 26, 1937 ) was a Dominican priest, politician, president of the Dominican Republic and Archbishop of Santo Domingo.

Biography

Ascent to the Archbishop of Santo Domingo

After attending school, he completed an apprenticeship at the preparatory college ( Colegio de El Estudio ) and at the seminary of Santo Domingo, the study of philosophy, Catholic theology and canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University ( Pontificia Universitas Gregoriana ) followed in Rome, he in 1883 with a doctorate in philosophy and a licentiate graduated in Catholic theology and canon law. In Santo Domingo, he was a student of the former President, Monsignor Fernando Arturo de Merino. In addition, he completed a multi-year studies at the Pontifical Latin American priests College " Pius " ( Pontifical Colegio Pío Latino Americano ), of which the most gifted students of his time, he was one.

After the Merino 1885 in Rome appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo, he returned with it in his native country, where was his ordination to the priesthood on December 19, 1885. In 1888 he was first priest in San Juan and then in 1890 at the Cathedral of Santo Domingo. He was also Vice-Chancellor of the local seminary " Thomas Aquinas ", where he was a lecturer in philosophy, Latin language and theology. In later years he was then parish priest of Santa Bárbara de Samaná, Santa Cruz del El Seibo and San Juan de la Maguana. Recently he was parish priest of Concepción de la Vega, where he was named an honorary citizen for the construction of a church on account of its use.

He also began a political career in 1903 as a deputy of the National Congress, where he represented the interests of the province of La Vega. In the same year he traveled to Rome, where he was designated in October 1904 by Secretary of State Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val Titular Archbishop of Mithymna and successor of Archbishop Merino ( coadjutor ). After the death of Fernando Arturo de Merino, he was on August 20, 1906, his successor as archbishop of Santo Domingo.

President from 1912 to 1913

After the fall of Eladio Victoria, he was appointed by a decree of the National Congress ( Congreso Nacional) is the president of the Dominican Republic on 30 November 1912. Background was, was that derived from years of ongoing tensions, in particular the different storage as Horacista (followers of Horacio Vásquez ) and Jiminista ( partisans of Juan Isidro Jiménez ) is considered a neutral person in the office of the President as necessary enjoyed the trust and respect and could stabilize the peace. During his short tenure, he had particular support for the U.S. to offer him economic but also military assistance, which he accepted because of the contracts entered into by Ramón Cáceres on May 3, 1907 Dominican- American Treaty. This also meant that the U.S. government approved an additional credit of 1.5 million U.S. dollars to pay the unpaid for six months government employees.

After his resignation, he devoted himself to turn his theological work as Archbishop of Santo Domingo. Moreover, took place on October 3, 1913, he was appointed Apostolischern delegate in Cuba. He held until 1915 this office.

One of his major literary works that are largely unpublished, however, is the history of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo ( "Historia de la Eclesiastica Arquidiocesis de Santo Domingo "). In 1920 he wrote a letter of protest to the U.S. ambassador in Santo Domingo, Russell, after the occupation of the Dominican Republic by the United States because of the brutal methods of the U.S. occupying power. It stated:

On October 11, 1935, he resigned as Archbishop of Santo Domingo, and was appointed to his death Titular Archbishop of Sergiopolis. Successor as archbishop was Ricardo Pittini.

In his honor, a part of the province of La Vega in 1992 separated and declared under the name of Monsignor Nouel for independent province.
