Adolph Ferdinand Gehlen

Adolph Ferdinand Gehlen ( born September 15, 1775 in Buetow in Pomerania; † July 15, 1815 in Munich) was a German chemist.

Gehlen, son of a pharmacist his hometown, underwent at the local school in-depth studies of the learned languages before he trained in Königsberg at the apothecary and university professor Karl Gottfried Hagen for the pharmacist profession and then studied at the University of Königsberg three years. He then worked in the pharmacy to the White Swan with Rose Valentine this year in Berlin. From 1803 to 1805 he was co-editor of the new general journal of chemistry ( 6 volumes ). Since 1806 he gave the Journal of Physics and Chemistry out (9 volumes). 1806 Gehlen went to Halle / Saale, where he received his doctorate at the University and as a lecturer in the Institute as well as by Johann Christian Reil worked as Zoochemiker. In 1807 he went to Munich to compete at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences a job as an academic chemist. His responsibilities were, among others, the Bavarian mining, iron and steel works, glass and porcelain factories; for the royal porcelain factory Nymphenburg he developed colors.

Since suitable premises were missing, the laboratory work had to take place in Gehlen's private apartment. Under such conditions, experimenting with toxic substances such as cyanide and arsenic compounds his already fragile health was hardly conducive. In experiments with arsine, which should be completed before an already approved vacation for a spa treatment, Gehlen suffered an acute intoxication, which he barely 40 -year-old died after nine days währendem Leiden on July 15, 1815.
