Adolph I, Count of Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein

Adolf I (c. 1307; † January 17, 1370 in Idstein ) was Count of Nassau and founder of the line of Nassau- Idstein.

Family

He was a son of Count Gerlach and his first wife Agnes of Hesse. One of his brothers was the Archbishop of Mainz Gerlach of Nassau. Other brothers were Johann and Ruprecht

He married Margaretha von Nürnberg ( † after 1382 ) a daughter of Viscount Frederick IV of Nuremberg. The marriage produced many children were born.

  • Friedrich ( † 1371 ), a canon in Mainz
  • Agnes († 1376 ) married his first wife, Count Werner IV of Wittgenstein, in a second marriage Eberhard I of Eppstein
  • Margarethe was Abbess in the monastery Klarenthal
  • Elisabeth ( † 1389 ), married Count Dieter VIII of Katzenelenbogen.
  • Adolf (1353-1390) was Archbishop of Mainz

  • Walram IV (1354-1393) was the successor of his father

Five other children died young. Adolf had with Johann Adolf of Nassau ( † 1420 ) an illegitimate son. This has held various ecclesiastical offices.

Life

His father took him around since 1338 at the rule. In 1346 he took over after the abdication of his father in favor of his sons the rule along with his worldly brothers. He mortgaged his share of Lauren Castle 1346. He also pledged the castle and town Katzenelenbogen to Count William of Katzenelenbogen. Since no trip occurred, this property was lost. The village Welmich he sold in 1353 to the Electorate of Trier.

The brothers divided the inheritance in 1355. John I founded the line of Nassau -Weilburg, Ruprecht -founded the line of Nassau -Sonnenberg and Adolf founded the line of Nassau- Wiesbaden- Idstein.

Adolf resided mainly in Idstein. There he settled expand the city church and build the witches tower. In Wiesbaden, he has promoted the weaving. He built the castle Adolfseck, which he applied in 1356 Kurmainz fief. Empire Politically on the pages of Charles IV,
