Adolph III, Count of Waldeck

Adolf III. (* 1362, † April 19, 1431 ) was from 1397 to 1431 Count of Waldeck to Landau. He was the founder of the elder line Waldeck -Landau.

Life

Adolf was a son of Count Heinrich VI. and his wife Elizabeth of mountain. His older brother was Henry VII of Waldeck. Adolf married in 1387 Agnes of goats Hain, daughter of Count Gottfried VIII of goats grove. From the marriage of the son and heir Otto emerged. Adolf and his family lived on the assigned by his father castle Landau and remained there after the death of his father in 1397 and the division of the county in the lines of Waldeck and Landau.

Much of his reign was marked by confrontations with his brother. He did not agree that Henry had destroyed the previous alliance with the country county of Hesse in 1400, his attack on the outskirts of Kassel. As a result, also be part of the country was invaded by Hessian troops. Adolf wanted to restore good relations with Hesse. Henry VII published in 1406 nineteen complaints against his brother and suggested as a referee before the mayors and councils of cities Korbach and Niederwildungen. In return, Adolf accused his brother that he had sold arbitrarily the Schartenberg to the Archbishop of Cologne. Attempts to come to an agreement between the brothers remained for years without success.

Only in 1421 it came through the mediation of Count Johann II of goats grove, Adolf Schwager, a comparison between the two brothers and their sons Otto and Wolrad. The division of the county was indeed confirmed, but it was also determined that neither side was allowed without the knowledge or consent of the other side to sell or pledge the country test a hurry. The rules for both sides and Lehnsregister documents should be collected in a common repository on Burg Waldeck. Home Fallen fief should revert to the full House. Likewise, the spiritual benefices should be awarded jointly by both sides. The Burgmannen and councils should investigate and settle any conflicts. In the following years this contract was renewed and clarified.
