Adolph Strümpell

Ernst Adolf Gustav Gottfried von Strümpell ( born June 28, 1853 in New Autz, today Jaunauce, Kurland, † January 10, 1925 in Leipzig) was a German physician, a specialist in internal medicine and university teachers. He was the son of the philosopher Ludwig von Strümpell.

Together with Vladimir Bekhterev and Pierre Marie he first described the ankylosing spondylitis.

His textbook of special pathology and therapy of internal diseases (2 volumes, Leipzig 1883/1884 ) appeared in more than 30 editions and was translated into several languages.

Life stages

Adolf von Strümpell was appointed in 1883 as an associate professor at the University of Leipzig, 1886, he received a full professor at the University of Erlangen and 1903 at the University of Breslau. In 1909 he was appointed to the University of Vienna and 1910 at the University of Leipzig. In 1915 he became Rector of the University of Leipzig.

From March 1923 he stayed at the sick Lenin in Moscow. With it, other physicians were called to Lenin's bedside, the time for knowing were: Max nun (Hamburg), Oswald Bumke (Leipzig), Oskar Minkowski, Otfrid Foerster (both from Wroclaw ) and Solomon Henschen (Sweden).

1931 a street in Leipzig Probstheida was named after him Strümpellstraße.
