Adolphe Pictet

Adolphe Pictet ( born September 11, 1799 in Lancy, † December 20, 1875 ) in Geneva was a Swiss linguist.

Pictet was known for his research in the field of comparative linguistics. He is considered, along with Julius von Klaproth as one of the inventors of linguistic paleontology.

He was the son of Charles and Emma Pictet Cazenove and a cousin of the biologist Francois Jules Pictet. Pictet studied in Geneva, Paris, Berlin, London and Edinburgh. In Berlin he attended lectures of Hegel, among others. Adolphe Pictet died at the age of 76 years.
