Adonara

Adonara ( Bahasa Indonesia: Pulau Adonara, outdated Adenara, also Dnara, Lamala Crama, Sebrão ) is an Indonesian island of Solor Archipelago. It is located east of Flores, Solor north of and west of Lomblen. To the north lies the Banda Sea. With 1,659 meters Adonara is the highest island of the archipelago and has an area of 497 km ².

Management

Adonara part of the Kerajaan Adonara of the administrative district ( kabupaten ) Ostflores in the province of East Nusa Tenggara.

History

In the 16th century, the Portuguese were the first Europeans reached the region and claimed, among other things Adonara as their territory. At this time the island was sparsely populated, there were only seven or eight villages. 1599 had been built two churches on Adonara. In the 16th century except for a Christian all the villages were inhabited by animists. However, the Christian village changed in the 17th century to Islam. Since 1650 on the island existed a local Kingdom. 1851 sold the Portuguese governor of the possessions of the Little Sunda Islands José Joaquim Lopes de Lima, the island along with other areas of the Netherlands. This was officially confirmed by the Treaty of Lisbon in 1859.

Culture

On Adonara one language is spoken with the same name. Adonara belongs to the Malayo -Polynesian languages. The population belongs to the Muslim and Christian dormers.

Geology

The Ili Boleng volcano on Adonara is active.
