Adrar des Ifoghas, and the Adrar des Iforas, Ifoghas Mountains, ( Tifinagh: ⴰ ⴷ ⵔ ⴰ ⵔ ⵏ ⵉ ⴼ ⵓ ⵖ ⴰ ⵙ ) is a 250,000 square kilometer mountain range in the Sahara. It is located in the northeast of Mali Indians Kidal region and to a lesser extent in the Algerian provinces of Adrar and Tamanrasset. With Aïr, Ahaggar and Tibesti, it is one of the most important mountain ranges of the Sahara.
Geology
The Adrar des Ifoghas consists mainly of sandstone. Water is available in several Gueltas.
Name
The Berber word adrar means mountain. Ifogha is the name of a rich and influential family Tuareg, Kel Ifoghas, nomads who lived in the area long. In a broad sense refers to " Ifoghas " all Tuaregs of the region. They are traditionally nomads, camels, cattle and sheep breeding. The name of the Mauritanian Adrar Plateau goes back to the same word.
History
The Adrar des Ifoghas is rich in Neolithic rock art and cave paintings.
Colonization
The largest settlement is Kidal, capital of the same named Kidal region. Other settlements are Tessalit, Boughessa, Essouk, Télabit, Abeïbara approximately in the center of the region and Adjelhoc.
