Adriaan Blaauw

Adriaan Blaauw ( born April 12, 1914 in Amsterdam, † December 1, 2010 in Groningen ) was a Dutch astronomer.

Blaauw studied at the Universities of Leiden and Groningen and, among other things, at the Yerkes Observatory, Leiden Observatory and the University of Groningen active. The focus of his research were star clusters and the less dense stellar associations, from binary systems in the explosion of a partner liberated ' runaway star, the structure of the Milky Way and star formation and the cosmic distance scale.

Blaauw was a successful science manager. Among other things, he was co-founder of the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, 1970-1974 second -General of the European Southern Observatory and 1976-1979 President of the International Astronomical Union. He also published on the history of astronomical research organizations such as the ESO and the IAU.
