Adriaan van den Spiegel

Adriaan van den Spiegel (also Adriaan van den Spigelian or Adrianus Spigelius; * 1578 in Brussels, † April 7, 1625 in Padua ) was a Flemish anatomist, surgeon and botanist.

Life and work

Mirrors studied in Padua in Girolamo Fabrizio and Julius Casserius ( Giulio Casseri; 1552-1616 ). Approx. In 1604 he was awarded his doctorate for Dr. med. 1612 he left Italy and traveled through Belgium and Germany. Shortly thereafter, he was first violinist Medicus of Bohemia and Moravia. On December 22, 1616 in Padua appointed professor of anatomy and surgery in place of Casserius.

His research involved the vascular and nervous system and the liver anatomy. The Spigelian hernia is named after him. He also worked on flat and round worms.

Ehrentaxon

To him, the genus of the plant family of Spigelia L. Brechnuss plants ( Loganiaceae ) was named in honor.
