Origin and Meaning of the Name

The name comes from the Latin Hadrian and is often interpreted as a man from the Adriatic port city. The nickname Publius Aelius Hadrianus of the Emperor (2nd century ) goes according to ancient tradition on the origin of his parents back: Hadria, today Atri, Teramo (not Adriatic south of Venice, from which the Adriatic Sea received its name ).

Distribution in Germany

With increasing tendency of the first name Adrian is awarded in Germany since the 1970s, however, occurs as early as the 13th century. He now ranks among the top 50 of the most popular first name.
