Adrianus Johannes Simonis

Adrianus Johannes Cardinal Simonis (* November 26, 1931 in Lisse, Netherlands) is a retired Roman Catholic Archbishop of Utrecht.

Life

Adrianus Johannes Simonis studied in Hageveld and Warmond the subjects Catholic theology and philosophy. In 1957 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked as a pastor in two parishes. From 1966 to 1969 he specialized in Rome in trade exegesis of the New Testament.

1970 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Bishop of Rotterdam. He received his episcopal consecration on March 20, 1971 Martinus Jansen, his predecessor in the episcopate. His motto is Ut cognoscant te.

On June 27, 1983 Simonis was first Koadjutorerzbischof and in the same year, on December 3, Archbishop of Utrecht. He directed more than twenty years, the Dutch Bishops' Conference. On May 25, 1985, Pope John Paul II was a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Clemente to the College of Cardinals.

Cardinal Simonis took part in the conclave 2005, in which Benedict XVI. was chosen. This took on 14 April 2007, the resignation, which Simonis had filed upon reaching the age limit. Until the enthronement, his appointed on 11 December 2007 Willem Jacobus Eijk successor, he directed the Archbishopric as Apostolic Administrator further.
