Adrien Zeller

Adrien Zeller ( born April 2, 1940 in Saverne, † August 22 2009 in Haguenau ) was a French politician of the UMP. From 1996 to 2009 he was president of the Alsace Regional Council.

The UMP he was a member since 2002. Previously, he was a member of the CDS and UDF. From 1986 to 1988 he was Secretary of State in the second cabinet of Jacques Chirac.

Adrien Zeller strengthened the powers given to the French regions through decentralization and used mainly European support for a modernization of Alsace. As a bilingual Alsatian with professional experience in the European Commission it was a concern cross- border cooperation. He worked closely with its neighbors in Baden- Württemberg, Rhineland -Palatinate and Switzerland; the Tri-national metropolitan region of the Upper Rhine, was initiated by him, completed by his successor in the office of the President of the Regional Council, Philippe Richert.

For his services he was, inter alia, awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

He died unexpectedly at the age of 69 of a heart attack.
