Advanced Simulation and Computing Program

The Advanced Simulation and Computing Program ( ASC ), formerly known as the Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative ( ASCI ) is a program of the U.S. government, which was started in 1995 and is used primarily to simulate nuclear weapons tests since 1992 a moratorium on the U.S. Government is subject. The program is under the Nuclear Safety Authority ( National Nuclear Security Administration / NNSA ) of the U.S. Department of Energy and has an annual budget of approximately 600 million U.S. dollars. The program is especially known by the TOP500 list of the world's fastest supercomputer, where the computer program occupy top places regularly. The program cover research centers Los Alamos National Laboratory / LANL (Los Alamos, New Mexico), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory / LLNL ( Livermore, California), and Sandia National Laboratories / SNL (Albuquerque, New Mexico ) and several American universities participate. Known hosts of the program include:

  • IBM Roadrunner at Los Alamos National Laboratory (fastest computer in the world, as of June 10, 2008 )
  • Blue Gene / L at LLNL
  • ASC Thor 's Hammer / Red Storm on SNL (2nd place)
  • ASC Purple at LLNL (4th place )
  • ASC Q at LANL ( 6th place)
