Adwa
Adwa ( Amharic አድዋ, also Adowa, Italian Adua ) is a city in northern Ethiopia, near the border with Eritrea. It has 43 582 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2005) and is located at 14 ° 10 ' N, 38 ° 54' O14.16666666666738.9Koordinaten: 14 ° 10 ' N, 38 ° 54 ' E
History
Adwa was known by the battle of Adwa on 1 March 1896 struck in the Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II, an Italian army under Baratieri to flight. With this victory the attempt of Italy was prevented to dominate Ethiopia as a colony. Ethiopia remained independent and Italy could not zoom in on Eritrea beyond its colonial empire in East Africa.
