Æðey

Æðey (Eng. " Eider Island " ) is an island in northwestern Iceland. It is located in the northeastern part of the large fjord Ísafjarðardjúp and faces the coastline Snæfjallaströnd upstream.

Æðey is 2.2 km long and 0.8 km wide. With an area of 1.26 km ² it is the largest island in the fjord. At its highest point, it projects above the sea surface 34 m. The island has been inhabited since the Middle Ages and even today there is a farm on it.

Similar to the lying close to the southern shore of Djup Vigur Island, this island is a bird paradise. One can find especially many breeding places of eider ducks and draw from it the island its name. The farmers cultivate these hatcheries and relate significant additional income from the sale of the down. In addition, large puffin colonies live on the island.

Since 1946 there is also a weather station on the island.

In summer there is a regular boat connection to Isafjordur.
