Ælla of Northumbria

ASES (also Aella, Aelle, All, Alli ) ( † 21 March 867 ) was of 862 / 863-867 King of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. Alternatively, his reign is dated to 866-867.

Life

Family

The source location to Aelle is very scarce and contradictory. About its origin is not known, but it is possible that he was a relative of Rædwulf ( 844 or 858) and Osberht ( 862/863-867 ), who were also kings of Northumbria. Although most sources lead Aelle as illegitimate rulers who Historia de sancto Cuthberto shows him as Osberhts brother.

Rule

An exact date of his coronation is just as problematic as the duration of his reign. Chroniclers give 862/863 as a coronation year, while coin finds indicate strongly that his predecessor Osberht remained in office until 866. Agreement among all sources about the fact that the " rightful king " Osberht deposed and ASES, a " tyrant who could not make a claim to the throne argued ," was determined to succeed. During the Civil War, it entbrennenden Osberht of sacrilege, the church was guilty, to lands at Wercewurde ( Warkworth ) and Tillemuthe ( Tillmouth ) to deprive the northern Bernicia. Aelle confiscated church property in southern Deira in Billingham, Ileclif ( Cliffe ), Wigeclif ( Wycliffe ) and Crece ( Crayke ) to fund his army.
