Aeluroscalabotes felinus

Cat Gecko ( Aeluroscalabotes felinus )

The Cat Gecko ( Aeluroscalabotes felinus ) is a tree-dwelling ( arboreal ) species of the family of Lidgeckos ( Eublepharidae ).

Cat Geckos are found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, where they inhabit preferred cool - moist montane rain forests with streams or rivers. They are up to 18 cm long, the males are smaller than females. The body top is reddish brown with white spots, chin and sometimes the belly is white. As a member of Lidgeckos it lacks the typical gecko adhesive pads on the fingers, but as adaptations to their arboreal lifestyle they put their tail as a prehensile organ and can face their claws ( oppose ). Cats geckos feed primarily on small arthropods.

The animals come from time to time as wild-caught in the terrarium, with most individuals already die during transport. In Thailand, a law which prohibits fishing, trade, import and export of cat geckos there applies.

The Nominantform A. felinus felinus was described in 1864 by Günther, the first description of the subspecies A. felinus multituberculatus was made in 1927 by Kopstein.
