Aerobee

The Aerobee (also originally known as Aerojet General X-8 ) rocket was a small ( about 8 feet long ) unguided sounding rocket which started for the exploration of the upper atmosphere and cosmic radiation in the United States primarily in the 50s of the 20th century been.

The Aerobee was built by Aerojet General. The company started work in 1946 and made the first start of a complete Aerobee on April 24, 1947 the White Sands Missile Range, where it reached an altitude of 58 kilometers. The rocket was in two stages: a solid-fuel rocket as the starting stage and a liquid-fueled rocket (fuel aniline, nitric acid oxidizer ) as a second stage. The missile could reach heights of 230 ( in later versions up to 400 km ). The payload typically returned back to a parachute to the ground.

The first carried out with instruments of an Aerobee flight was the fifth flight, which took place on March 5, 1948 in White Sands, and carried the instruments for investigation of cosmic rays. He reached an altitude of 117.5 kilometers. The last flight of the Aerobee was in 1958, about 165 flights - with some variations - took place. The developers of the Aerobee also constructed the Aerobee - Hi ( first start: 1955).

Of all the variants Aerobee 1037 copies were started. The last launch took place on 17 January 1985.
