Aert van der Neer

Aert van der Neer (also Aart van der Neer, or Artus; * 1603 or 1604 in Gorinchem, † November 9, 1677 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch landscape painter. He specialized in landscapes in winter and at night.

Life

Undetectable since 1629 in Amsterdam, registered as Igerom Aert van der Meer, he worked as a painter. About his education, little is known; probably it took place at Camphuysen in Gorcum, as he had married in 1629 his sister Elisabeth. The couple had at least six children: Grietje ( 1629), Eglon (1635? ), Cornelia (1642 ), Elisabeth ( 1645), Pieter ( 1648), and Alida (1650). Where he was in the thirties, is unknown. Between 1659-1662 he was a guest host of the Kalverstraat and wine merchant, but went bankrupt.

Unrecognized during his lifetime, he died penniless. Today he is seen as a major landscape painter of his time. His son, Eglon van der Neer (ca. 1635-1703 ) was, among other things Electoral Palatinate court painter in Dusseldorf.

Van der Neer's paintings are now exhibited in London, among others, in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, in the Wallace Collection, now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the National Gallery.
