Æthelwold of East Anglia

Æthelwald (also Aediluald and Aethelwold, German: "noble ruler "; † 664) was 655-664 King of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of the dynasty of East Anglia Wuffinger.

Family

Æthelwalds father was Eni. The Kings Anna and Æthelhere were his brothers and predecessors. The mentioned as Enis son in the Anglian collection Æthelric 's probably just a misspelling for his brother Æthelhere.

Life

Æthelwalds brother Æthelhere was largely dependent on Penda of Mercia in his short reign. Penda and Æthelhere fell in the battle of Winwaed at Loidis (Leeds ) on 15 November 655 against Oswiu of Northumbria. While the north of Mercia and Oswiu went to the south by Penda's son Peada, followed in East Anglia Æthelwald to the throne.

About Æthelwalds rule was hardly delivers anything. A sovereignty over East Anglia Essex can not be excluded for the time Æthelwalds. Æthelwald was the godfather, was baptized as King Swithhelm of Essex to 661 in Rendelsham, the royal seat of East Anglia, Bishop Cedd.

Æthelwald probably died in the year 664 as a plague broke out in the whole of Britain, which claimed many victims.
