Steintäschel ( Aethionema rotundifolium )

Steintäschel ( Aethionema ) are a genus of flowering plants in the family of cruciferous plants ( Brassicaceae). The genus includes about 30 to 50 species with distribution focus in the Mediterranean and West Asia.

In Central Europe Steintäschel varieties are best known as ornamental plants for gardens. Preferably, these are planted on rocky, stony places, or gravelly, well drained ground. The ornamental varieties have been bred mostly all from the Persian Steintäschel ( Aethionema grandiflorum ) out.

Description

Aethionema are branched, one to perennial herbaceous plants or rarely evergreen subshrubs, are sensitive to frost. The sessile, simple leaves are frosted bare and often bluish.

Most many flowers are in high leafless inflorescences. The hermaphrodite flowers are cruciform. There are four sepals present. The four white to pink colored, rarely yellowish petals are undivided, not or hardly emarginate and the same size. There are six stamens present. The maximum short style ends in a capitate stigma.

Steintäschel - species form of two types of one-to viersamigen fruits: Zweiklappig dehiscent, broad- winged little pods or nuts on upright stems.

The genus Aethionema was in 1812 by William Townsend Aiton in Hortus Kewensis; or, a Catalogue of the Plants Cultivated in the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew, Volume 4, page 80, 2nd edition first described.
