AFC East

The AFC East is one of the American Football League National Football League ( NFL) Division. The teams in the NFL are divided into two Conferences (American Football Conference ( AFC) and National Football Conference ( NFC) ), which in turn are divided into four divisions.

The four teams in the AFC East, the Buffalo Bills, the Miami Dolphins, the New England Patriots and the New York Jets. They originate in the former American Football League ( AFL) in 1970, with the National Football League ( NFL) merged.

The Master Division pulls securely into the play-offs. In addition to the four division winners of each Conference pull the two teams with the best win ratios into the play -offs. Thus therefore may qualify for up to three teams in the AFC East for the play- offs.

History

It was founded in 1960 as a division AFL Eastern Division and was one of two Division of the then newly formed AFL. The former founding members were the Bufallo Bills, the Boston Patriots, the New York Titans and the Houston Oilers. 1966, respectively, the AFL license to establish a new franchise. The businessman Joe Robbie and actor Danny Thomas, who had acquired the license, decided to choose Miami as the location for the franchise. In this way were therefore established in 1966, the Miami Dolphins, which became the fifth member of the Division. In 1970, finally followed by the next and so far biggest change in the division. Because this year the AFL merged with the NFL and thus there were more teams in the league, which led to the division of the two Conferences were reorganized. Therefore, in the AFL Eastern Division, which was renamed as part of the merger in the AFC East, the Houston Oilers, who were members of the AFC Central from now, replaced by the Baltimore Colts. The Colts were then until the end of the 2001 season for the AFC East. As of the 2002 season, they then had to because of the new expansion teams from Houston in the AFC South change so that each division again had the same number of members.
