Afghan parliamentary election, 2005

In the parliamentary elections in Afghanistan in 2005, both parliaments (including Meshrano Jirga ) and provincial councils were elected. It was the first parliamentary elections in Afghanistan since the elections of 1988.

On 18 September 2005, the Wolesi Jirga elections for, the " House of the People ," and the 34 provincial councils were held in Afghanistan. For the 249 seats in the Parliament ( 68 per quota for women), there were 2,800 candidates (330 women), for the provincial councils over 3,000. Despite threats to stop 12.7 of the 28 million Afghans were registered. To select eventually went 6.8 million, representing a turnout of about 54 %. Parties are prohibited by the Constitution. The election was seen internationally as a success and marked the end of the so -called " Petersberg Process".
