History

Mamoas and other finds indicate a prehistoric settlement. From the Castro culture originate finds. Later, probably Phoenicians and Celtiberian settled here. The present town dates back to the resettlement by the Count of Tui, Don Paio Vermudes, 868-890. After conquest and partial destruction by Almansor end of the 10th century the local monastery and its surrounding town was rebuilt in the 11th century, as confirmed in the royal surveys of 1258. Since the 16th century Afife belongs to the district of Viana do Castelo.
