Afobaka

Afobaka on the map of Suriname

Afobaka is a place in Suriname in the district Brokopondo.

In Afobaka is the built in time from 1960 to 1964 Brokopondo dam on the reservoir. The dam has a length of 12 km. To open up the dam and place Afobaka a 75- km long traffic route was developed by the Aluminum Company of America ( Alcoa) from the aluminum smelter in Paranam built from bauxithaltiger red soil. The path link was taken over by the state in 1968. The especially during the rainy season some of them critically motorable road was paved in 2009. The Dam with hydroelectric power plant is a tourist attraction and offers a beautiful view over the lake. Nearby there is a recreation park with holiday homes and swimming pool of the Suriname Aluminum Company ( Suralco ), a subsidiary of Alcoa.
