Georgetown Agreement

The group of African, Caribbean and Pacific States, in short ACP Group (English African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States shortly ACP countries; French Groupe des États d' Afrique, des Caraïbes et du Pacifique short Pays ACP) denotes an International Organization of currently 79 countries in Africa, Caribbean and the Pacific - mostly former colonies of France and Britain. Founding document of the organization is called the Georgetown Agreement, which includes contractual agreements to mainly economic cooperation.

The main objectives are the sustainable development of the Member States, their integration into the world economy, and the establishment of a "new, fair and just world order." From the outset, was the coordination of the economic ties of the Member States of the European Union in the foreground. Nestled in a series of agreements ( Lomé I to IV), the cooperation between the ACP Group and the EU as the biggest example of an (economic ) "North -South cooperation ."

In recent years, the ACP Group has expanded its focus from the EU on the world community, and set a number of measures within the World Trade Organization ( WTO).

With the ACP countries, the EC has completed the strongly developmentally motivated Lomé Convention in the course of its common commercial policy. The first agreement, which was later renewed several times, was signed in 1975 in Lomé, Togo. With him, the EU countries wanted to take into account, among other things their colonial past. The agreement is based primarily on a system of tariff preferences with which these countries access to the EU market should be facilitated. In addition, funds have been provided to stabilize the prices of exports of these countries. Successor to the Lomé Convention, which expired on 29 February 2000, the Cotonou Agreement.
