Founded in 1860 by Christian Schibsted as Christiania Adresseblad, she continues to appear in Riksmål. Additionally appear with Aften on a limited Oslo evening edition ( 2010 edition: 105 012 copies) and since 1990 a Sunday edition of 232,900 copies.

In most cases, conservative aligned and the Høyre related parties, the newspaper was pro- fascist in the 1930s and 40s and printed on 7 May 1945 Knut Hamsun's obituary of Adolf Hitler positive. During the Cold War, the newspaper was strongly anti-Communist and pro-American. In recent years, the conservative attitude, however, has shifted a little to the left, and the newspaper is now considered Israel and USA critical. Aftenposten is owned 100 % of the Schibsted Group.

Aftenposten has correspondents in Berlin, London, Stockholm, Moscow and Washington, DC.
