Aftermath is the fourth in the UK and the sixth released in the U.S. studio album by the Rolling Stones. In the U.S., it was released on 20 June and in the UK on 15 April 1966. As a producer Andrew Loog Oldham was responsible.

Album from 3 to 8 December 1965 ( the end of their second North American tour with 41 concerts in the period from 29 October to 5 December 1965) as well as after their first Australian tour (which was taken from the 18 February. till March 1, 1966) from 6 to 9 March 1966 in the legendary RCA Studios in Hollywood, California, 6363 Sunset Boulevard. It's after Out of Our Heads the second Rolling Stones album that was created exclusively in the USA and also the group's second album, which was released in stereo.

Aftermath is known for its musical diversity, especially Brian Jones experimented with many instruments. So he is in the song Lady Jane on a dulcimer, a kind of zither, to hear at Paint It Black, which is, however, represented only on the American edition of the LP, he used a sitar in Under My Thumb a marimba.

Once again, the American version of a Rolling Stones album differed significantly from the British. The track list was shortened ( Mother's Little Helper, What To Do, Out Of Time and Take It Or Leave It missing, the latter two were a year later on the compilation of Flowers published), it opens up the No. 1 hit Paint It, Black American edition of the LP.

For the cover design was responsible Andrew Oldham ( under the pseudonym Sandy Beach ), the cover photo is from the photographer Guy Webster, the recordings on the back of Jerry Schatzberg. An alternative cover was designed for the American market, an alienated portrait of the band, designed by Steve Inglis.

Despite all the differences, the album was both in the U.S. (No. 2 ), England (1st place ) and in Germany ( nine weeks at # 1 on the album charts ) a great commercial success for the band.

The American magazine Rolling Stone voted the album in their list of the 500 best albums of all time at number 109

Aftermath, which contained only Mick Jagger / Keith Richards compositions for the first time, meant the great musical breakthrough for the band. With the release of this album Jagger and Richards were recognized as composers, they could catch up with the names of the scene as Lennon / McCartney and Bob Dylan, and show that they were not only talented rhythm-and - blues enthusiasts, but a viable band with musical ambitions.
