Agathocles of Bactria

Agathocles (up to 180 BC ) was a Greek- Bactrian king named " the righteous " ( Dikaios ).

To the person of Agathocles is hardly known Secured. He is not called when preserved classical authors. He was only a vassal king of Demetrius I, who ruled an area between Bactria and India policy.

Agathocles is noteworthy mainly because of its extensive and partly exceptional coinage. He minted a series of memory coins that him along with other important Greek rulers, such as Alexander the Great, Antiochus ( Antiochus II well ), the founder of the Bactrian kingdom Diodotus I, whose son Diodotus II, Euthydemus I., Pantaleon and Demetrius I call. The purpose of these commemorative coins is controversial, often it is assumed that Agathocles was a usurper, who wanted to legitimize his power and strengthen precarious position with these coins.

In addition to these commemorative coins he let even those with bilingual signs in Kharoshti or Brahmi and Greek influence. Finally, there are embossed with Buddhist symbols and those with Hindu gods. It is the earliest surviving images of Hindu deities. Noteworthy are also embossed in nickel.
