The first description by George Engelmann was published in 1875. One of the numerous synonyms Agave parryi var applanata

We distinguish the following subspecies and variety:

  • Agave parryi subsp. parryi
  • Agave parryi subsp. neomexicana
  • Agave parryi var cousii
  • Agave parryi var huachucensis
  • Agave parryi var truncata

Agave parryi is a member of the group Parryanae with the largest area of distribution within the group, which extends from central Arizona to Mexico. Remarkable are the single or compact, globular, group-forming plants with gray to green, stiff, smooth linealischen to egg-shaped upturned leaves with the sharp, needle-like Enddorn. The red-brown leaf margins are irregularly toothed. The Rispige, straight, 3 to 5 m high inflorescence forms in the upper half 12 to 15 irregularly long branches. The flowers are yellow to orange. The various subspecies and varieties differ in size, leaf and flower structure. Agave chrysantha and Agave hybrids with schottii are known. Agave havardiana is closely related, however differences in leaf structure can be seen.

The subspecies parryi subsp neomexicana and the variety cousii can survive down to minus 20 ° C in dry state periods of frost.
