Agecroft Hall

Agecroft Hall is a manor house of the Tudor period, which was purchased in 1925 and transported to Richmond ( Virginia). It now serves as a museum.

History

The house, which today looks back on the James River (Virginia), was originally built in Pendlebury, Lancashire similarly situated overlooking the River Irwell. It was built at the end of the 15th century and inhabited by the families Langley and Dauntesey. After a period of decline, which was associated with industrialization and the coal industry in the immediate vicinity of the building, the house was sold in 1925 in an auction to Thomas C. Williams, Jr. of Richmond, who disassemble it and near its hometown was rebuilt. Agecroft Hall is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Immediately adjacent is Virginia House, a country house with a similar history of dislocation and transport overseas.
