Agencies of the European Union

The agencies of the European Union are the European Union institutions, usually with its own legal capacity, to assist the Member States and their citizens. Their locations are spread throughout the EU, and so fulfill the desire for a wider geographical devolution. In contrast to the institutions of the European Union they are not founded by the founding Treaties ( primary legislation), but through acts of the institutions ( secondary legislation ).

A special role is an executive agencies: They are set up by the European Commission and responsible for the management of Union programs. They are not set up on a permanent basis, but for a limited period and equal in rank to a Directorate General of the European Commission. Unlike other agencies, they must be at the seat of the European Commission, therefore, was based in Brussels or Luxembourg.
