Aggrey Awori

Aggrey Awori Siryoyi ( born February 23, 1939 in Budimu ) is a Ugandan politician.

Awori was in the village Budimu, barely two kilometers from the Kenyan border, born as the tenth of 17 children of the priest Jeremiah Awori and Miriam Awori. His siblings include Moody Awori, politicians in Kenya, and Mary Awori. From May 1961 to June 1965 he studied at Harvard University. Since that time he has been married to Thelma Awori, the UNDP Director for Africa.

He joined the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 and in Tokyo in 1964 as 110-meter hurdler on. Since 1964 he holds the national record in the 110 Ugandan - meter hurdles.

He worked for Uganda as ambassadors among others in the U.S. and Benelux. After the takeover of Idi Amin, he was arrested as the then Director-General on the radio and fled to Kenya, where he worked for several years as a journalism lecturer at the University of Nairobi. After the fall of the amine and the seizure of power, Yoweri Museveni, he spent some time in the bush and led a rebel group. But soon he turned back to the established policy. In 1994 he was a deputy of the Constituent Assembly. Since 1996 he has represented the constituency in Busia northern Ugandan Parliament. In the presidential elections of 2001 he ran against Museveni and reached 1.42 percent of the votes, the third-largest number of votes.
